大青山省级自然保护区其前身为国有大青山林场，于1959年建场，总场坐落在薛庄镇大良村。2001年，山东省人民政府批准列为省级自然保护区。区内植物资源丰富，植被覆盖率达96%以上，有木本植物62科138属294种；草本植物50余种；中草药719种；苔藓植物110余种。其中属国家一、二级保护植物7种，省级重点保护植物有黄檀天然次生林。保护区有陆生野生动物142种，其中国家二级保护动物13种，山东省重点保护动物119种。
保护区内侧营寺分区有国家林业部和山东省林业厅1974年联建的木本良种基地近5000亩，现保存到刺槐选优无性系232个，黑赤松种源19个；板栗优良品种50多个，山楂良种6个，与薛庄镇5万亩板栗基地连成一片，堪称全国最大的生态农业、科技农业观光旅游区。
