学名为β,β′－二氯乙基硫醚。化学式(ClCH2CH2)2S。油状液体，有芥子气味；熔点14.4℃，沸点217.5℃,相对密度1.27。芥子气是第一次世界大战期间使用过的糜烂性毒气。
碱性水解或氯化都能使芥子气失去毒性，故漂白粉可用作芥子气的解毒剂。
将乙烯与一氯化硫反应，可制得芥子气和游离硫：
2CH2CH2+S2Cl2─→(ClCH2CH2)2S+S
为了制造、贮存和运输的方便和安全，芥子气也可按两步法制成：
2HOCH2CH2Cl+Na2S─→(HOCH2CH2)2S+2NaCl
(HOCH2CH2)2S+2HCl─→(ClCH2CH2)2S+2H2O
