三岔河位于勐养自然保护区离公路不远的地方，下车后需步行几公里的林中小路才能到达。这里森林茂密，鸟兽出没。在野象等经常出没的地方，人工辟有一口水塘，在水里放上野象、野牛等动物爱吃的盐巴（水里本身也有芒硝）。距水塘不远的隐蔽处修有一个碉堡似的观察房，人可以躲在里面观察不受伤害。只要在此守候一两天，就不难看到野象等来饮水、滚泥巴和玩耍的情况。但到此需要熟悉情况的当地导游引路，千万不要擅自冒险进去。
