机体内的许多部位均有吞噬细菌和异物功能的吞噬细胞，这些细胞包括结缔组织内的巨噬细胞、血窦的内皮细胞和网状细胞，并认为它们均源于网状细胞，故总称为网状内皮系统。但近来研究证明，血窦内皮细胞和网状细胞都不是吞噬细胞，也不能转变为吞噬细胞，只有在网状组织内及血窦的边缘分布许多巨噬细胞。并证明体内所有巨噬细胞均起源于骨髓的幼、单核细胞，它们发育为单核细胞，再进一步发育为巨噬细胞，故早年的网状内皮系统的概念是不确切的。
