太阳把塘水晒得暖洋洋的，一种形如细砂的水生植物，正忙着繁殖它的后代。直到每1平方米的水面，有100万个它们的个体，还是不肯罢休。这就是最小的有花植物，饲养鱼苗的好饲料——无根萍。
无根萍是浮萍的一种，它的个子太小了，长只有1毫米多，宽不到1毫米，比芝麻还小得多。无根萍的外形同一般萍很相似，它们上面平坦，底下隆起。顾名思义，这种植物是没有根的。有趣的是，这种微小的植物也有花，花当然更小，只有针尖般大。
无根萍以自己微小而带花的个体，给植物世界创造了“最小的有花植物”记录。
无根萍的体内含有大量淀粉。目前，人们正研究无根萍体内的淀粉合成过程。它是一种很有前途的淀粉资源，将来很可能成为代替小麦和大米的粮食。
