牧草的一个类群。指除禾本科、豆科及莎草科（包括灯心草科）以外的其他科牧草。它与杂草是两个不同的概念，后者指对作物、牧草等目的植物有害的莠草。杂类草种类庞杂，在各类草地中都有分布，一般占草地植物学成分的10～20％，在林间草地和荒漠草地中占有重要地位。在原生植物群落受到破坏的撩荒地、采伐迹地、过牧地段以及施用有机肥料过多的地块和放牧营地（畜圈）周围，杂类草常作为先锋植物出现。多为草本，也有半灌木和灌木。其生物学特性和饲用价值差异很大。饲用意义较大的杂类草有菊科的蒿属，藜科的梭梭属、猪毛菜属、滨藜属(Atriplex)、地肤属，百合科的葱属等。多用于放牧，有的也可割草，但因茎杆粗硬或水分多、叶片易脱落，不易调制干草。
