一根细金属管上部封闭，把它做成一喇叭口，口上蒙一橡胶薄膜（或金属薄膜），另一端开口。当上端处于室温，下端接近低温液体时，由于低温气体不断进入开口的管子向上运动到热端，受热膨胀而形成纵向的振荡称之为热声振荡，在开口端经过低温液体时，可在喇叭口的振荡膜上感受到振荡有一个突变，用它可以测得液氢或液氦的液面高度。
