用手工操纵焊条、用电弧作为热源的焊接方法，又称手弧焊（见图）。焊条与工件各为一个电极，电弧引燃于其间。焊芯与工件的熔化金属形成焊缝金属，焊条药皮产生的气体和熔渣起保护熔池、稳定电弧和渗入合金的作用。使用不同的焊条可以焊接各类碳钢、低合金钢、不锈钢、铸铁、镍和镍合金、铜和铜合金、铝和铝合金等材料。焊条直径有2～6毫米的一系列规格。小直径焊条适用于薄板（1～3毫米）和各种位置的焊接；大直径焊条适用于厚板的平焊和横焊位置。手工电弧焊机比较简单，主要组成部分为电源和焊钳，使用方便灵活。手工电弧焊的应用虽因气体保护电弧焊和其他高效焊接方法的发展而有所减少，但仍然是各个工业部门常用的焊接方法，用于多品种、小批量的焊接件最为经济，在许多安装焊接和修补焊接中还不能为其他焊接方法所取代。但焊工的操作技术水平对手工电弧焊质量影响很大，因此焊工必须接受严格培训，方能从事此种焊接工作。
