评定燃油自燃性的指标。燃料自燃性对柴油机的起动性和燃烧过程都有影响，它是柴油的一项重要性能指标。为了测定燃油的自燃性，规定着火性能极好的正十六烷(C16H34)的十六烷值为100,规定着火性能极差的α－甲基萘（C10H7CH3）的十六烷值为0，将正十六烷和α－甲基萘按不同比例配成混合物作为标准燃料。当被测试燃料与某一配比的标准燃料的着火性能相当，而这种标准燃料中十六烷所占容积百分数为x％时，x即为被试燃料的十六烷值。燃料的十六烷值高意味着它自燃性好，用于柴油机时起动容易，工作柔和。如十六烷值过高，则柴油机排气冒黑烟,经济性下降；如果过低,则起动困难，运转粗暴。一般柴油机燃油的十六烷值在40～60范围之内。在寒冷或高海拔地区应选用高十六烷值燃料，大型低速柴油机可用十六烷值为30的燃料。十六烷值可用发动机法或实验室法测定。发动机法是在试验发动机上测定，常用的有闪光重合法、着火延迟期法和临界压缩比法等。实验室法是用燃料的某些物理性质间接测定，常用的有苯胺点法和柴油指数法等。
