体长251-315毫米,体重45-74克。体形细长;尾短，约为体长的1/3;耳短、椭圆形。毛被丰厚;具1对肛门腺。毛色有季节变化，夏毛于背部、四肢外侧呈咖啡棕色或灰棕色唇、腹部、四肢内侧呈白色而稍沾浅黄色;尾端黑色。冬毛为纯白色，仅尾尖仍为黑色。
栖于近村舍的针叶林或混交林中，也栖于草原、草甸及河湖岸边灌丛等生境。以岩隙、石堆、倒木、树洞和石墙下为穴。能爬树和游水。主要捕食鼠类，也吃野兔、鸟、蛙、鱼等。初夏开始交配，怀孕期9-10个月，翌年4月至5月初产仔，每胎4-9只，多达13只。
冬季毛皮质量较佳，可作装饰皮料。因是鼠类天敌，应予保护。
