河水搬运过程中携带物质的沉积。当搬运介质无力将碎屑物质往下搬运时，就将其堆积在河床、坡麓或河漫滩上。原因各种各样。比如河流的坡降小了，泥沙多了，泥沙的粒径粗了，流量减了，等等。加积率变化很大。尼罗河每年给河谷加积的厚度为 9 毫米，而底格里斯—幼发拉底河的年沉积厚度为 18 毫米。美国西部半干旱地区，年沉积厚度可达 40 毫米。人的活动对加积率也会有所影响。比如美国加利福尼亚州的水力采矿，可以使当地河流的加积率提高一倍。
