期货合同指由期货交易所制定、由交易双方达成、在规定的时间和地点交割一定数量商品的标准化合同。 对于商品期货交易而言，期货合同代表一定数量的某种商品，但并不是所有的商品都可以以期货合同的形式进行交易。期货商品必须具有同质性;能够分级和标准化;有大量的供给与需求和完全竞争性的市场;价格波动也比较大。期货合同的基本特征表现在以下几个方面:①期货合同是由交易所制定的，必须在期货交易所内进行买卖。②期货合同是标准化的合同。合同当中的条款，如交易单位、品质、价格、交割地点、交割方式以及交易方式等都是标准化的。③期货合同不是到期必须履行实际交货的合同，虽然在期货合同中规定双方应在交割月份按时交货和付款，但交易所除了允许交付实际货物之外，还允许买卖期货合同者在规定的交割月份前任何时候通过对冲来抵消其履行实际交货的义务。实际上，在期货市场中，买卖期货合同的绝大多数人都是在期货合同到期之前进行了平仓，真正实现货物实际交割的仅仅占期货交易的一小部分(在美国大约只占交易量的5%，在英国大约占15%)。④期货合同由于解决了远期交货合同转手困难的间题，使交易者在期货交易所内可以以最快的速度达成交易，从而增加了期货市场中期货交易的流动性，扩大了参加交易的人数范围。
