A pilot study on Miocene through Holocene sediments throughout the continental slope of the South China Sea was carried out for evaluating possible sediment regions and layers which might be suitable for distribution of gas hydrates.

| 大陆坡 continental slope 大陆架向海一侧，从陆架外缘较陡地下降到深海底的斜坡。它展布于所有大陆周缘，为全球性地形单元 。大陆坡上界水深多在100～200米之间；下界往往是渐变1500～3500米水深，但在邻近海沟地带，陆坡下延至更深处。大陆坡宽度约为20～100千米以上，总面积计 2870万平方千米，占全球面积5.6％。大陆坡坡度多为3°～6°，1800 米深度以上的平均坡度为 4°17′。大陆坡底质以泥为主，还有少量砂砾和生物碎屑。大陆坡基底为变薄的大陆型地壳。陆坡上还有褶皱、断裂构造，一些陆上构造线可延伸至陆坡。由于河流径流和海洋上升流作用，陆坡沉积物中可含有丰富的有机质，陆坡上有巨厚沉积层的地方具有良好的油气远景。还可有锰结核、磷灰石、海绿石等矿产。在陆坡一些上升流区可形成渔场。 |
