      除去明火源后,能使火焰熄灭或不蔓延的材料。在发生火灾后会造成严重后果的场合,如矿山、轮船、高层建筑、石油化工和发电厂等,要求其中所用电工设备的绝缘材料是阻燃型的。以电线、电缆所用绝缘尤为重要,因为它们着火后会蔓延而酿成重大火灾。
  
  阻燃材料性能的优劣可以氧指数表示,它实质上是考核材料维持燃烧所需要的最低氧浓度,
  
  氧指数小于21者为可燃性材料,氧指数为21~27的称自熄性材料,氧指数大于27的称为阻燃材料。
  
  为提高材料的阻燃性,可添加阻燃剂。阻燃剂分活性型和添加型两类。活性阻燃剂有不饱和聚酯和环氧两种。添加型阻燃剂有氯基、溴基类卤素化合物、含磷的添加剂以及无机金属氧化物系等。
