炮火反击的时机和目标，通常是在敌人进攻准备时，打击集结、开进、准备冲击的敌坦克、步兵战车（装甲输送车）和步兵，及威胁最大的炮兵和战术导弹兵；战斗过程中打击占领表面阵地立足未稳之敌和敌人的指挥系统。炮火反击通常预先计划，也可临时组织。使用的兵力一般是数个炮兵营。要求精确测定目标位置，抓住时机,迅速开火,以突然猛烈的火力打敌措手不及。1952年10月17日，在上甘岭战役中，韩国军步兵约两个营进攻537.7高地北山阵地,在向冲击出发地运动时，中国人民志愿军集中两个炮兵营的火力实施炮火反击，使韩国军遭受重大伤亡，被迫停止了进攻。
