古希腊亚里士多德和中世纪哲学曾使用过的哲学概念。F.培根沿用它并赋予新的内容，指称事物的内在结构或规律。在亚里士多德看来，形式、质料和具体事物都是实体，有时甚至说只有形式才是实体。培根则认为物质性的事物才是实体，形式则是物质的结构。他坚持形式与事物的性质不可分。他在《新工具论》中明确指出：形式"不是别的，正是支配和构造简单性质的那些绝对现实的规律和规定性"。他认为形式是物体性质的内在基础和根据，是物质内部所固有的、活生生的、本质的力量。物质之所以具有自己的个性，形成各种特殊的差异，都是由于物质内部所固有的本质力量，即形式所决定的。人们只要认识和掌握了形式，就可以在极不相同的实体中抓住自然的统一性，就可以在认识上获得真理，在行动上得到自由。他把发现和认识形式看作是人类认识的目的。
