医学学科中的一门学科。研究疾病的分布和影响分布的因素，借以探索病因、阐明流行规律，并为防治疾病提供数据及进行估价。流行病学的研究方法主要有流行病学调查、分析和实验检查、实验等。流行病学可以从不同角度和侧面来分类，例如，以描述疾病在不同人群、时间、空间、不同环境条件下的分布为主要内容者，称为描述流行病学；以分析疾病的发生率与内外因素的关系为主要内容者，称为分析流行病学，以比较暴露于某因素的人群或动物与对照发病率之差异为主要内容者，称为实验流行病学。其他尚有理论流行病学、血清流行病学、代谢流行病学。
