美国报业主、美国现代报业的奠基人。1847年4月10日生于匈牙利。1864年到美国参加林肯骑兵部队。一年后退伍,到圣路易城做杂工,自学法律。1867年取得律师资格,同年3月入美国籍。1868年任德文《西方邮报》记者。1869年12月当选密苏里州众议员。1876～1877年任《纽约太阳报》驻华盛顿记者。1878年购得《圣路易电讯报》，1880年将它与《晚邮报》合并为《邮报-电讯报》，成为获利最优厚的晚报。1883年买下纽约《世界报》。1884年当选国会议员，数月后即辞职，专心办报。1887年又出版《世界报晚刊》。他对《世界报》的报道、编排和经营进行了一系列改革，宣称该报是独立报纸,为市民服务，揭露贪污腐化，倡导社会改革运动。他强调新闻的真实、准确、文字简洁通俗，重视社论。被认为是19世纪70～80年代兴起的"新新闻事业"的创始人。1890年辞去《世界报》主编职务。晚年双目失明。1911年10月29日逝世。遗嘱捐赠200万美元作为创建哥伦比亚大学新闻学院(1912年开办)的基金，并赠款设立普利策奖。
