60年代中后期，美国学生运动、反越战运动和民权运动迭起，使第二次世界大战之后一直占主导地位的结构功能主义受到强烈的冲击。冲突理论、社会交换论、符号互动论、拟剧论、民俗学方法论等理论流派从不同角度向帕森斯理论体系提出挑战，并逐渐成为美国社会学的主流。亚历山大力图在"后实证主义"科学哲学的基础上综合各派之长，重构帕森斯的结构功能主义理论传统。他提出科学思维运行在经验环境和形而上学环境之间的"科学连续体"上；科学的发展既受经验环境的制约，亦受形而上学环境的制约；理论逻辑和经验或实验逻辑对于科学的发展具有同等重要的意义；强调理论的重要性，反对实证主义和科学主义。
亚历山大还反对将理论逻辑化约为意识形态的做法以及极端的相对主义，主张采取一种"多维度"的理论视角，融汇不同理论传统和理论流派，重新解决社会学的前提预设问题，即秩序问题和行动问题，以此达到新的综合，并于1985年首次使用新功能主义一词命名这种新的理论运动。
亚历山大还反对将理论逻辑化约为意识形态的做法以及极端的相对主义，主张采取一种"多维度"的理论视角，融汇不同理论传统和理论流派，重新解决社会学的前提预设问题，即秩序问题和行动问题，以此达到新的综合，并于1985年首次使用新功能主义一词命名这种新的理论运动。
