原名西北体育学院,创办于1954年9月, 1956年改用现名，地址在陕西省西安市。 西安体院面向西北地区5 省、区招生。27年来已培养了本科毕业生2412人、中专毕业生 973人以及各类短期进修班毕业生近千人。西安体院现设有体育系和运动系， 均属本科，学习年限4年。前者主要培养体育教师和其他体育专业人材；后者主要培养专项教师和教练员。另招收少量研究生，学制 3年。1981年学院在校学生1302人，其中研究生 6人。共有教师 222人，包括教授、副教授23人，讲师65人。西安体院占地面积310亩，校舍的建筑面积4万多平方米。主要的体育设施有:室内篮排球房、小型球类房、体操馆;室外田径场、游泳池和各种球类场地。学院图书馆藏书11万多册。
