1635年在路易十三的首相红衣主教黎塞留的倡议下建立。设院士40人，绝大部分是文学作家，后来陆续入选为院士的也有少数哲学家、史学家、经济学家，以及知名的政治家、外交家，甚至军事家等。院士是终身制的职位。一个院士逝世，另选一个递补。候选人可由自己申请或社会推荐。
学院原定的任务为编纂字典一部、修辞学一部、诗律一部以及语法一部，实际上只完成了字典和语法。学院每年颁发文学奖金若干种，例如"文学大奖"、"小说奖"、"诗歌奖"等。
