浩瀚的太平洋上有一个谜一般的世界，这就是太平洋诸岛及其周围的海域。
有这样一个神话传说：从前，南太平洋上有块巨大的陆地，北至夏威夷，南至汤加，西至斐济，东至复活节岛，东西长八千公里，南北宽五千公里，称为“姆”，在它上面有居民六千四百万。可是这个高度文明的大陆，在距今一万两千年前，突遭火山活动破坏，沉没于太平洋中。现在“姆”的文化仅剩一点残余，我们只能从复活节岛上的巨大石像遗迹中了解到。至于岛上发现的象形文字，至今还没有一个人能够译解出一个字来，科学家为此绞尽脑汁。
复活节岛周长只有六十公里，距智利和秘鲁有四千公里，就是距西边最近的皮特克恩岛也有两千公里之遥，这里四周看不到一切陆地的影子，可以说是地球上最寂寞的地方。
令人惊异的是岛上有四百五十多个巨大石像，这些外貌各异的石像，最高达二十米，重达五十吨。这些石像干什么用呢？何时建立？原始时代的人又是用什么方法加工它们并竖立起来的呢？这都是未解之谜。
