分致病性和非致病性两大类，广泛存在于自然界中，呈球形或卵圆形，直径为0.5～1μm，呈链状排列，长短不一，短者由4～8个细菌组成，长者达20～30个细菌细胞，液体培养基中易呈长链，固体培养基中易呈短链。大多数链球菌在幼龄培养基中可见到由透明质酸形成的荚膜，继续培养后则消失，不形成芽胞，亦无鞭毛，易被碱性苯胺染料着色，呈革兰阳性。
