植物形态：常绿灌木，高可达2米。外皮褐色，幼枝密被柔毛，小枝淡黄色，嫩苗红色。叶对生，薄革质，椭圆形或倒卵形，长3~6厘米，宽1.5~3.5厘米，基部阔楔形，先端钝，全缘，基部有主脉3条，很少5条，表面深绿色，无毛，背面灰绿色，密被茸毛，叶柄短，长4~6毫米，花玫瑰红色，1~3朵，腋生，萼钟形，4~5裂，多少与子房合生，花瓣4~5枚，雄蕊多数，分离，子房下位，2~6室。浆果，球形，熟时暗紫色，顶上有宿存的萼片。 生态分布：产我国南部各省；多生于丘陵灌丛中及荒山草地中。 药用部分：根、叶、茎、果实入药，秋冬季采根，叶全年可采，夏末秋初收果（果可食）。 用途：性味甘、辛，微涩，平。茎叶有收敛作用，能止血止泻，止痛，散热，拔脓生肌。根能活血通经，解久热不退，治心痛。果可食，能滋养补血，健大肠，治蛇伤。用量：根5钱~1两，果3~5钱，大便秘结者忌服。
