由于厄瓜多尔、秘鲁以西洋面的水温反常增高、盐度降低，造成全球性气候发生变化的现象。发生于每年圣诞节前后，“厄尔尼诺”一词，意即“耶稣之子”。正常年份，水温于12月份升高，次年5月份降低。有些年份，海水则持续增温达一年，导致鱼群大量死亡。在这些年份里，大气环流运动被打乱，随后出现世界性的气候异常，一些地区干旱无雨，一些地区洪涝频繁，一些地区冷暖变化无常。
