【国际货币】亦称“国际通货”。可越出国内流通领域，在世界市场上执行一般等价物职能的货币。在历史上，能够充当世界货币的只有黄金和白银，铸币和纸币是不能充当国际货币的，因为后者一出本国范围就失去了原来的法定意义。但当代，世界货币常为一个或几个世界经济强国所支配。它们将其在国内以黄金和白银为准备发行和流通的纸币拿到世界范围内流通，使其执行国际货币职能的货币，并在一定程度上发挥着与金银相同的国际储备的作用。英镑、美元、瑞士法郎、法国法郎等货币在一定时期、一定范围内都是如此。国际货币具有以下作用:①作为一般的支付手段，用来支付国际收支的差额。②作为一般的购买手段，用来购买国外商品。③作为社会财富的代表由一国转移到另一国，如支付战争赔款、对外贷款或援助等。在国际贸易和国际金融发达的现代，国际货币作为国际支付手段，平衡国际收支的差额是最重要的职能。
