病变组织或器官发生纤维组织增生的过程，常是变性炎症、缺血、坏死、创伤等引起的后果。如创伤后伤口内产生肉芽组织并逐渐转为纤维化，最后形成瘢痕。发生在内脏器官(如心、肺、肝等）的弥漫性纤维化，可引起脏器变形、变硬，故有硬化之称，如肝硬化。纤维化的后果按其发生部位及范围而异，如皮肤局限性纤维化的影响较小；而心瓣膜的纤维化或瘢痕形成，常引起瓣膜变形，形成狭窄和闭锁不全，导致心力衰竭。
