| 行星 planet 绕恒星公转、质量小于太阳质量千分之七的近似球形的天体。它们以表面反射恒星光而发亮。现知太阳系有9颗，常称九大行星（见下页表）。肉眼可见的有水星、金星、火星、木星和土星，合称五星。由于它们十分明亮，并在群星间穿行，很早就引起了人类的注意，planet一词来源于希腊语，含义是流浪者，中国古代则有行星、游星、惑星等称谓。1781年，英国F.W.赫歇尔偶然间发现了天王星；1846年，U.J.J.勒威耶等人通过计算导致了海王星的发现；1930年，美国C.W.汤博则发现了冥王星。尚有许多人在努力寻找“第十颗大行星”。九大行星的轨道都是以太阳为焦点的椭圆，大致具有同向、共面、近圆等特性。20世纪70年代以后大规模的空间探测使行星研究取得了进展，并发现了银河系中其他恒星拥有行星或行星系统的某些迹象。
