位于四川省美姑县境内，面积21864公顷，1978年经国务院批准建立，主要保护对象为大熊猫及森林生态系统。
本区地处凉山山系东麓，与马边大风顶国家级自然保护区连成一片，为大风顶按照行政区域而划分的两个自然保护区。本区的自然概况及生物资源分布状况均与马边大风顶基本一致，区内的国家重点保护植物有珙桐、连香树、水青树、大王杜鹃等20多种，国家重点保护动物有大熊猫、羚牛、小熊猫等20多种。
