猩猩科Pongidae又称大猿，是与人科最接近的动物，包括现代的猩猩、黑猩猩和大猩猩以及一些古猿类。猩猩科最著名的早期代表是森林古猿Dryopithecus，这是最早发现的古猿，在将近150前就已经发现，在中新世中晚期分布于欧洲。另一类比较著名的早期代表是中新世晚期主要生活于亚洲的西瓦古猿Sivapithecus，过去著名的腊玛古猿Ramapithecus也包括在内。腊玛古猿原本被认为是人类的祖先，后来发现实际上是西瓦古猿的雌性个体，这一类群可能和现代的猩猩关系比较密切而和人类与非洲大猿关系较远。
我国一些学者认为我国发现的禄丰古猿Lufengpithecus可能更加接近于人类与非洲大猿的共同祖先。禄丰古猿原被称作禄丰腊玛古猿，后列为单独的属。我国发现的古猿中最重要的是巨猿Gigantopithecus（下图），巨猿是我国上新世和更新世早期南方动物群的重要构成，其中以广西柳城“巨猿洞”发现的化石最为丰富。巨猿可能是有史以来体型最大的灵长类，可能比大猩猩还要大上一倍，不过由于发现的化石主要是下颌骨和牙齿，对其体型的估算并不可靠。
