离心泵分为一般离心式水泵和自吸式离心泵两种。自吸式离心泵不需启动灌水，小型离心泵采用自吸形式，使用很方便。
一、结构特点
自吸式离心泵的效率由叶轮泵体流道的水力结构参数和泵体自吸结构的合理性决定的，任何因素不可偏废。BX型均属内混自吸式离心泵，该泵主要特点有：
1、叶轮和泵体的水力结构参数选用较大的叶片出口安装角和出口边宽，泵体流道断面面积采用比常规设计的加大20-30%。
2、蜗壳流道与泵体出口相连，在靠近泵体出口处开有一个上回水窗口。泵体下方的回水流道，采用了内混流道球阀自动开关装置（简称球阀），它结构新颖、简单、加工方便、使用可靠。
二、工作原理
这种自吸式离心泵的工作原理是，叶轮转动，吸入进水管中的空气与由回水阀体处吸入的水在叶轮内混合，气水混合物经泵体压水室、扩散管和回水窗排入气水分离室。混合物中的空气较轻，从水中逸出，并从排气杯排到大气中。分离了空气的水又经回水阀体、喷嘴喷向叶轮，再次与吸入的空气混合。这样反复循环，逐渐将进水管中的空气排尽，最后正常扬水。这时，回水阀体进、出口压差急增，球阀在这一压差作用下上升，将回水阀体入口关闭，回流即被截断，泵即进入一般离心泵工况下运行。当停机后，回水阀体两端压差迅速消失，球阀由于自重而返回到原位置。
这种结构由于蜗壳流道出口与泵体出口相通，克服了液流的扩散和碰击损失；又由于采用了球阀自动启闭装置，能及时消除泵正常扬水时的回流损失。因此，这种自吸结构，能使自吸式离心泵的效率接近离心泵水平。这种泵型在进水口处装有拍门4，在停泵后，由进水管内水下泄形成的真空度和泵内贮水的静压作用下，拍门就被近关闭上泵进口，保住了泵内贮水。短时间内再启动时，无需补灌引水，这给用户在使用中带来了方便。
