人们依据一定的道德标准及其认识，在多种可能的道德行为方式中，自觉地抉择自己行为方式的一种精神活动。历史上有的伦理学家认为，道德选择不受客观必然性的影响,只受个人自由意志的支配。有的则认为,人的行为完全受必然性的支配，否认人的道德选择能力。马克思主义伦理学反对绝对意志自由论和道德宿命论，认为人是社会关系的产物，因而人的行为不能不受客观必然性的制约。但是,人又有认识必然性的能力,人们只要认识了客观必然性及其反映在道德上的客观要求，就能在道德行为的多种可能性中自由地选择，并承担道德责任。因此，正确认识自由和必然以及个人利益和整体利益的关系是解决道德选择问题的基础。在社会主义社会中，提高人们道德选择能力的关键，在于使人们深刻认识社会历史发展的必然规律和共产主义道德要求，并在实践中身体力行。这样，人们就能在各种道德矛盾和道德冲突中，自觉地选择对社会或他人有益的道德行为，抵制和批评各种不良的道德现象。
