郭沫若1928～1930年间流亡日本时，以恩格斯《家庭、私有制和国家的起源》的研究方法为向导，撰写的一部研究中国古代历史的学术专著。全书分为六个部分：中国社会之历史的发展阶段；《周易》时代的社会生活；《诗》《书》时代的社会变革与其思想上之反映；卜辞中的古代社会;周代彝铭中的社会史观;追论及补遗。其中，《中国社会之历史的发展阶段》曾发表于《思想》1928年第四期，关于《诗》《书》《易》的研究，曾化名杜衎,在1928年9、10月间《东方杂志》上连载。该书提出商代和商代以前都是原始公社制社会，西周为奴隶制社会，春秋战国时代奴隶制已在崩溃的观点。1940年7月18日,作者为纠正过去研究中的失误，又撰写《古代研究的自我批判》一文（收入《十批判书》），提出殷商也是奴隶制社会的观点。该书初版于1930年，上海联合书店印行；以后多次修订重印。1982年人民出版社据1977年重印本编入《郭沫若全集》历史编第一卷。该书自1930年初版发行以来，在中国学术界独树一帜，产生了重大影响，成为现代中国史学主要流派之一的代表作。（见彩图）
