1947年1月中旬巨金鱼战役后，国民党郑州“绥靖”公署所属部队主力滞留鲁西南老黄河以北，其整编第75师正由豫北向商丘、徐州调动，陇海铁路（今兰州－连云港）中段两侧地区主要由地方保安团队守备。中国人民解放军晋冀鲁豫野战军司令员刘伯承、政治委员邓小平决心在陇海铁路徐州至开封段南北地区展开攻势作战。以第1、第2、第3[[纵队]]为路北作战集团；第6、第7纵队为路南作战集团，夺取敌守备薄弱的城镇，求歼徐州、郑州来援之敌，配合华东野战军在鲁南作战。1月24日战役发起后，路北集团连克山东省定陶、单县、曹县等城，并控制了陇海铁路民权至商丘间约35公里地段；路南集团克安徽省拓城、太康、鹿邑、杞县及亳县（今亳州）等城，并于亳县以北歼商丘援军整编第75师第16旅大部。郑州“绥靖”公署急调已进占河北省南乐、大名等地的整编第27军所属第5军、整编第85师及由武汉调来的整编第72师驰援陇海路，企图在击破晋冀鲁豫野战军的攻势后，东进参加“鲁南会战”。2月11日夜，晋冀鲁豫野战军南北两集团向进至民权西部地区的整编第85师发起进攻，一度突入其师部所在地郑州庄砦镇。随后，以机动防御与第5军等部周旋于豫东民权、兰封（今兰考）和鲁西南地区，牵制当面敌军，配合华东野战军进行莱芜战役。在此期间，冀鲁豫军区第8分区和冀南军区第3分区部队收复南乐、大名等城。此役，共毙伤俘国民党军1.6万余人。
