      唐代诗人。字子华,越州山阴(今浙江绍兴)人。生卒年不详。昭宗龙纪元年 (889)登进士第。曾随宰相韦昭度出讨西川,任掌书记,累迁侍御史。一度去官,流落荆南,后召为左补阙,拜翰林学士,中书舍人。天复元年(901)朝贺时,受命于御前起草诏书十余篇,顷刻而就,深得昭宗激赏,进户部侍郎。同年冬,昭宗被劫持至凤翔,吴融扈从不及,客居阌乡。不久,召还为翰林学士承旨。卒于官。
  
  吴融的诗歌基本上属于晚唐温庭筠、李商隐一派,多流连光景、艳情酬答之吟唱,很少触及重大社会主题,前人评为"靡丽有余,而雅重不足"(《唐才子传》)。《四库全书总目》却说吴诗"音节谐雅,犹有中唐之遗风",可能指其一部分篇什中所包含的比较浑融疏淡的意境,如"吟处远峰横落照,定中黄叶下青苔"(《酬僧》)、"阑珊半局和微醉,花落中庭树影移"(《山居即事四首》)。其实,吴融诗的最大特色,还在于将温李的缛丽温黁引向凄清的一路。像"不必繁弦不必歌,静中相对更情多"(《红白牡丹》)、"几树好花闲白昼,满庭荒草易黄昏"(《废宅》),这类情趣在其诗作中是普遍存在的。《子规》、《叶落》、《野庙》、《途中见杏花》都是代表作。吴融也有少数感时怀事或托古讽今的篇章,如《彭门用兵后经汴路三首》、《文德初闻车驾东游》、《华清宫》、《隋堤》。其中七律《金桥感事》,气格沉雄,音节宏亮,是难得的佳篇。
  
  有《唐英歌诗》3卷,明汲古阁刊本。事迹见《新唐书》本传、《唐诗纪事》、《唐才子传》。
