文化人类学和社会学描述文化分布的概念之一。指一种文化模式所占有的整个空间。在社会学中有时和文化区混用，但二者所反映的地理空间有很大的差别。文化区是指一个大社区中的小社区，如一座城市中的若干社区。文化区域是指一种文化模式所占有的更大的区域。北美文化人类学家在研究北美洲部落文化时，根据几百个部落文化和居住地域的不同，把美国和加拿大划分为9个文化区域:平原区、高原区、加利福尼亚区、北太平洋海岸区、爱斯基摩区、麦肯齐区、东部森林区、东南区和西南区。这 9个区的居民来源及形成发展的历史背景不同，各有自己特殊的文化。这些文化区域是综合了影响文化的地理环境、生物环境和历史背景 3个要素而划分的。一个文化区域有自己特殊的自然地理环境，特殊素质的人口和特殊的形成与发展过程，因此形成地域性的特殊文化。当代社会学使用文化区域一词，一般是用以描述现代国家的文化在地理上的分布状况。
