生态旅游，生态观光(ecological tourism)一词最早出现可追溯至1965年，学者赫兹特建议对文化、教育以及旅游再省思，并倡导所谓的生态的旅游，发展至今生态旅游已成国际保育和永续发展之基础概念。1983年，学者赫克特提出「生态旅游」一词，成为目前最普遍使用的语汇。其将生态旅游归结出三大特点：
- 生态旅游是一种仰赖当地资源的旅游；
- 生态旅游是一种强调当地资源保育的旅游；
- 生态旅游是一种维护当地小区概念的旅游。
最后，学者赫克特将生态旅游定义为「到相对未受干扰或未受污染的自然区域旅行，有特定的研究主题，且体验或欣赏其中的野生动植物景象，并且关心区内的文化特色」。生态旅游学会 (The Ecotourism Society) 在1991年为生态旅游下了一个广为各界接受的批注：「生态旅游是一种具有环境责任感的旅游方式，保育自然环境与延续当地住民福祉为发展生态旅游的最终目标」
