湖南益阳人。中共党员。1964年结业于中国人民大学文艺理论进修班。1949年参加革命工作，历任区农民协会委员、区团委书记，《湘中日报》及《滨湖日报》编辑、记者，《湖南文学》编辑、编委，湖南师范大学中文系教师，湖南省哲学社会科学研究所文研室副主任，湖南省作家协会副主席、名誉主席，专业作家，文学创作一级。湖南省文联副主席、执行主席，湖南省文学学会会长，中国新文学学会副会长。1950年开始发表作品。1979年加入中国作家协会。
