秦始皇鞭出秦坡涧，秦始皇晚年来常熟巡游，欲上虞山以观东洋大海。爬至半山，秦始皇己气喘不止，汗流浃背，乃席地而坐休息。一心腹大臣见状，知其已无力再上高峰，乃献计：“皇上何不用赶山鞭将此山赶至东洋，坐观大海。"秦始皇忙取出赶山鞭，猛挥虞山，暗忖：此鞭系仙人所赠，曾将泰山赶至黄海之滨，区区虞山何足道哉。讵料任凭秦始皇挥鞭，虞山依然屹立不动。原来虞山又名卧牛山，乃神牛下凡所变，四足深埋地心，外力休想松动。秦始皇见已在半山鞭出一道深沟，虞山仍在原地，无可奈何只得下山。
此后，秦始皇席地而坐处称“秦坡"，赶山鞭挥出之深沟即称“秦坡涧"，至今留在虞山西部。
