该馆收藏的矿物、岩石、矿石、动植物化石标本 1.2 万多件，一级品100余件。其中有长 1.7米、直径 62厘米、重约 780千克的水晶，直径35厘米、厚25厘米、重102千克、含铜量达99.84％的圆状自然铜,重1.2克拉的新疆第 1颗晶体透明的金刚石，产于阿尔泰伟晶岩矿床的大型绿柱石、白云母，中外闻名的和田玉和各色碧玺、宝石等。还有1983年夏在中国首次发现，距今2亿3千万年前的完整的两栖类脊椎动物乌鲁木齐鲵和距今1亿6千万年前的脊椎动物苏氏巧龙的化石标本。
该馆设有地球科学、新疆矿产、新疆矿产资源开发利用及地质专业 4个陈列厅。陈列面积2400平方米。陈列了在新疆发现的121种矿产中的115种。该馆还举办地学夏令营，开展地学科普活动和举办专门性的展览，以扩大服务领域。
