本研究采用中国学习者英语口笔语语料库的笔语语料库子库作为样本,参照兰卡斯特大学的LANCAWAE语料库,从词汇多样性和词汇复杂度两方面分析了中国英语专业学生笔语词汇的发展,并将这一发展与其口语词汇发展,和国外学生笔语词汇发展作了比较,结果发现:我国英语专业学生笔语词汇发展不是一个持续上升过程,这个发展轨迹与口语词汇不同;我国英语专业学生在笔语词汇多样性和词汇复杂度两个指标上,均低于国外非本族语学生和本族语学生。

基于这一点,本研究通过词符/词形平均比率和词频概貌分别观察词汇多样性和词汇复杂性,目的是描写中国英语学习者在测试环境下的口头作文中产出性词汇发展变化规律,具体围绕两大研究问题:(1)产出性词汇多样性是否会随着二语学习者学习时间的变化而变化?如果存在变化,那么在不同学习阶段中,不同英语水平的学生之间有何差异?(2)产出性词汇复杂性是否会随着二语学习者学习时间的变化而变化?如果存在变化,那么在不同学习阶段中,不同英语水平的学生之间有何差异? 本研究采用中国学习者英语口语语料库(简称SECCL)中全国英语专业2001年四级口语考试的即席演讲和2003年八级口语考试的口头评论作为口语语料。
