现代土家语有s、z两个舌尖擦音声母,其来源非常复杂,一部分来自原始藏缅母语的舌尖擦音声母,一部分来自原始藏缅母语带s的复声母,一部分来自原始藏缅母语由非舌尖擦音构成的复声母。

湖南湘乡非组今读声母均为舌根音,部分乡镇方言中奉母读为舌根塞音;奉母的舌根塞音源于三等重唇音的分化以及匣母的影响;奉母的舌根塞音在未来演变中会擦化为舌根擦音,进而受普通话影响发生唇化。
