奥地利作曲家。1804年 3月14日生于维也纳，1849年 9月25 日卒于同地。幼年喜爱音乐，学会拉小提琴。1819年参加J.兰纳的弦乐四重奏团，演奏中提琴；后随兰纳参加职业轻音乐乐队，演奏小提琴。兰纳自组乐队后，施特劳斯曾任副指挥。1825年他自己组成乐队单独演出，1826年开始作曲。1833年带领乐队到欧洲各国巡回演出轻音乐，甚受欢迎。回国后于1835年被奥地利皇室委派专门负责宫廷舞会的音乐。施特劳斯一生写有各种舞曲250余首，其中圆舞曲占150余首，代表了从民间连德勒舞曲向维也纳圆舞曲转变的一个鲜明阶段。这些圆舞曲吸收了德国南部民间音乐的素材，具有一定的特色。其子在此基础上进一步加以发展，终于形成了典型的维也纳圆舞曲。因此，他被誉为"圆舞曲之父"。
