A simple and rapid method for simultaneous determination of nitrogen and carbon in soil samples for multi-purpose geochemical survey using elemental analyzer has been developed.

Samples are combusted in an elemental analyzer, CO2 is separated from other combustion gases by gas chromatography, and the gas enters the ion source of the mass spectrometer through a split interface.
