性质:在多电子原子中,电子不仅受到原子核的吸引,而电子与电子之间存在排斥作用,这种作用与原子核对电子的吸引正好相反,可看成其他电子屏蔽或削弱原子核对它的吸引,可归结为抵消一部分核电荷的作用,称屏蔽效应,所抵消的核电荷以屏蔽常数σ表示,这样,核电荷Z减屏蔽常数σ即为有效核电荷Z*:Z*=Z-σ。它是某电子实际感受到的核电荷,其大小随原子序数增加呈周期性变化。有效核电荷的改变不仅直接影响原子的大小,而且影响元素性质。
