英国德温特出版公司经营，1951年建立。开始时按国别，1963年后增按专业提供多种载体的英文专利题录和文摘(全技术领域)。其中主要有化学专利索引 (简称CPI)、电子专利索引(简称EPI)、世界专利索引(简称WPI)和世界专利文摘(简称 WPA)等，1978年开始提供联机检索服务。数据库主要由以下两种文档组成：WPI 文档收录1963～1980年世界20多个国家、地区和国际组织专利局公布的专利文献记录，每月更新同族专利数据；WPIL文档收录1981年以后世界30余国专利局公布的数据，每周更新一次。上述两种文档收录专利文献记录1000万条。通过美国的书目情报分时联机检索系统(ORBITⅣ)和"戴罗格"系统Ⅱ(DIALOGⅡ)、东京的系统发展公司日本情报中心(SDC-J)、伦敦的德温特－系统发展公司(Derwent-SDC)和法国的TELESYSTEMES-QUESTEL等检索系统提供联机检索服务，可使用国别和专利号、优先权项目、专利权人、发明人、主题词、国际专利分类号、德温特分类号、德温特细分码、德温特登记号等多种检索途径。1987年1月1日起新增生物技术文档，内容包括80年代以来千余种书刊中有关文章和各国、地区、国际组织有关专利的文献记录,每月更新一次。1987年第1周起数据库中增加中国专利文献记录。
