   豆科菜豆属一年生草本。古名菉豆、稙豆。原产印度、缅甸。主产于中国,次为印度、伊朗及东南亚,非洲、欧洲、美国有少量栽培。中国主产区在河南、河北,山东、安徽等省,江苏、四川、山西、陕西、湖北、贵州等省次之。主根不发达,侧根细长,茎高30~100厘米,有直立、半蔓和蔓生3种类型。蝶形花,黄色。荚为细长圆筒形。子粒有绿、黄、褐、黑等色。绿豆属短日照作物,对光照反应不敏感。生育期短,60~90天。要求较高气温,结荚成熟期喜晴朗干燥天气。闭花授粉。耐旱、耐瘠,耐微酸、微碱土壤,怕涝。可单作或与玉米、高粱、棉花、甘薯等间作或套作。中国南、北方可作春播或夏播。豆荚成熟不一致,种子无休眠期,应及时分收。主要病虫害有叶斑病、白粉病和绿豆象。绿豆富含蛋白质、维生素B、C、P。可作主食、糕点、粉丝和酿酒;还可作蔬菜和入药。茎叶可作绿肥。
