在煤田勘探之后，在煤矿建设和生产过程中，直接为煤矿生产服务的地质工作。矿井地质工作主要为生产提供准确的地质资料，确保矿井建设和生产正常进行以及煤炭资源的合理开发和利用。主要任务是：①研究影响煤矿建设和生产的地质因素，如地质构造、煤层、煤质的变化,水文地质和工程地质条件,侵入煤层或在煤层邻近的火成岩的特点和分布规律；②研究矿井瓦斯、煤尘、自燃、地温等，以及煤矿建设和生产中造成环境污染的地质因素；③研究含煤地层中伴生矿产的赋存规律和利用价值；④定期计算和核实储量,掌握储量动态,及时提出合理开发和利用煤炭资源的建议。矿井地质不应局限于地下巷道或露天矿坑的地质观测，必须结合地面地质、井田区域地质进行研究。此外，还应依据矿山开采结果与同一地段的勘探资料验证对比，正确评价，为改进煤矿地质勘探提供依据。
1949年以来，中国矿井地质工作随着煤炭工业的发展迅速开展。1953年以后建立了矿井地质机构和有关的科学研究机构，对矿井地质工作的开展起了推动作用。
