山西煤炭职业技术学院是经省政府批准、教育部备案由原国家级重点中专山西省煤炭工业学校改制晋升为独立设置的全日制专科层次的高等职业学院，隶属于山西省煤炭工业局，创建于1952年。学院占地面积250亩，建设面积10.29万平方米。学院设有高中起点二和三年制高职10个专业、中等职业学校毕业后三年制（对口升学）高职5个专业，初中毕业后五年制高职9个专业、初中毕业后三、四年制中专24个专业；采矿技术专业为省级精品专业；采矿技术、矿山机电、矿山测量确定为2004年唯一全省二年制专科试点招生专业。全院现有在册教职工275人，在校生5500人，其中全日制专科在校生3100多人，三年制专科500多人，五年制高职生2600多人；中专部在校生2100多人；高中部在校生300人。50年来，学院已为社会培养输送了2万余名各类专业人才。 学院设有采矿系、机电系、计算机系、煤化工系、经贸系、地测系、基础部、成教部、中专部和普通高级中学以所—梅园中学。学院有一支高水平的教师队伍。在164名专任教师中，有副教授11人，有高级讲师、高级工程师49人，讲师、工程师71人，已取得国家注册资格的“双师型”教师38人。学院还有外聘兼职教授和客座教授。学院有可供6000名学生使用的教学、文化、生活设施，近年来为办强实训教学、体现高职办学特色，增添了大批先进的教学、实训设备，总值达1292万元。图书馆藏书16万册，设有电子阅览室，学院网络中心与山西职教网站联通，形成了信息办公自动化功能的校园计算机宽带网络系统。共有微机600多台、7个现代化的计算机房、10个多媒体教室、4个语音教室、实习工厂和晋煤机电设备厂。注重校企合作办学，已与10个企业建立了“学生创业实训基地”。设有山西省煤炭职业技能岗位资格鉴定站和山西省计算机等级考试点，全国公共等级英语考试点。 学院按照“加强基础，拓宽专业，培养能力，突出技能，提高质量，办出特色”为原则。遵循“育人铸魂、益智强能”的宗旨，改革教育教学和人才培养模式，实行专业技能合格证与毕业证并用的多证书制度，拓宽了毕业生升学和就业渠道。2003年学生参加全省对口升学考试中，一次性升入本科院校68人，连续三年对口升学率为全省第一。去年开始学院的毕业生可直接参加中国矿大的本科单独招生考试。同时，对招收的专科生在校学可参加全省“专升本”考试实行中期选拔，送入本科院校继续深造。学院十分重视毕业的就业指导工作，连续多年邀请省内外用人单位在学院召开双向选择洽谈会，与西山、大同、霍州、晋城、潞安、阳泉、汾西七大重点矿业集团公司、兰华集团、安泰集团、三联集团等40多家大中型企业有长期的用人关系，毕业生上岗率达85%以上。特别是采矿技术、通风安全、机电一体化、测量、电子技术、煤炭综合利用等专业的毕业生连续五年供不应求。2003年学院被授于“全省毕业生就业指导先进集体”。
