性质:无色针状结晶。熔点33.5℃,沸点381.5℃(分解),358℃(53.3kPa),265℃(2.0kPa),相对密度0.86(55℃),折射率1.4534(45℃)。极易溶于醚,溶于乙醇、甲醇,不溶于水。在油菜籽制得的菜油或芥子油中,以及若干其他十字花科植物的种子中都含有较多芥酸。某些海生动物脂肪如鳕肝油中也含有芥酸。

制备方法:以菜油或油脚为原料,用传统的方法(皂化酸解、酸化水解或加压水解)水解制成菜油脂肪酸,再从菜油脂肪酸分离出芥酸。对混合脂肪酸采用冷冻、压榨、初步分离后,再采用减压精馏可得较纯的芥酸。

用途:芥酸的直接用途不多,主要用作精细化学品的中间体,用来制取各种表面活性剂、润滑剂、增塑剂、乳化剂、软化剂、防水剂、去污剂等。其衍生物芥酸酰胺([112-84-5])是塑料的润滑剂;芥酸氢化制成二十二烷酸,进一步加工制成山酸,用于舰艇上防止盐水腐蚀和防止藻类等附着在船体上。芥酸裂解可制取壬酸和十三碳二元酸,后者可制造人造麝香、耐低温耐光的优良增塑剂、尼龙-13和尼龙-1313。这类尼龙具备一般尼龙所不具备的特点,比其他尼龙更抗水,熔点低,能在低温下加工。
